TRANSCRIPTION
• Phonetic transcription (also known as phonetic script or phonetic notation) is the visual representation of speech sounds (or phones) by means of symbols.
• Phonetic transcriptions are usually written in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), in which each English sound has its own symbol. For example, the IPA-based phonetic transcription of the word HOME is ho ʊm, and the transcription of COME is kʌm. Note that in spelling, these words are similar. NEED FOR PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION

1.The vowel sound [ iː ] as in the words shown below is represented by different spelling: he, see, leave, believe, receive

3.The letters ch represent three different sounds as in: chip, machine, character
4.The same sound is represented by different letters: cough, fun, coffee; cot, kind; centre, sit; photo, fan; cook, pick, bike
5.An extreme example we come across in the sound sh[ ʃ ] which has fourteen spellings: shoe, sugar, issue, mansion, mission, nation, suspicion, ocean, nauseous, conscious, chaperon, schist, fuchsia, pshaw (A.C. Baugh, 13)
6.The letter l infilm is pronounced, whereas it is pronounced in palm and calm.
7.There is a redundancy of letters in a word like queue.
